Starting in late 2024, Microsoft will introduce checkpoint cumulative updates for devices running Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11, version 24H2 or later. This new type of updates aims to deliver security fixes and new features using smaller, incremental differentials to save bandwidth and time spent on installations. Admins won’t be required to take action.
Based on the meeting notes provided, it’s clear that Microsoft is planning to introduce checkpoint cumulative updates for systems running Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11, version 24H2 or later, starting in late 2024.
The purpose of these new updates is to provide security fixes and new features via smaller, incremental differentials, resulting in savings in bandwidth, hard drive space, and installation time for Windows users.
Once introduced, these updates will be automatically received by users, with no additional action required. Admins using Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) will not need to take any actions, as the updates will appear as normal monthly updates, but with enhanced functionality.
Users interested in exploring this new feature can do so by joining the Insider Dev Channel and installing Windows Insider Preview Build 26120.1252.
It’s noteworthy that Microsoft’s decision to introduce checkpoint cumulative updates comes five years after discontinuing Windows 10 Delta and Express updates.
