The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) has released a 2023–2024 “CISA Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence” to ensure secure and trustworthy development and use of AI, aligned with the White House Executive Order 14110. The road map focuses on four goals including cyber defense, risk reduction, operational collaboration, and agency unification. CISA also plans to implement five lines of effort to achieve its stated goals, emphasizing responsible use of AI, assuring AI systems, protecting critical infrastructure, collaborating with partners, and expanding AI expertise in the workforce. The agency hopes the initiatives will enhance national cybersecurity and prioritize security in AI-based tools and systems.

Based on the meeting notes, here are the key takeaways:

1. CISA’s “2023–2024 Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence” and “Strategic Plan” are focused on creating a secure and resilient infrastructure for the American public in response to the rapid adoption of AI technology.

2. The roadmap aligns with the strategic plan and is centered around four key goals: cyber defense, risk reduction and resilience, operational collaboration, and agency unification.

3. The onus of security is placed on AI developers, mandating secure by design principles throughout the entire development lifecycle, rather than solely on AI consumers.

4. CISA has identified five lines of effort to unify and accelerate its roadmap, including responsible use of AI, assuring AI systems, protecting critical infrastructure from malicious use of AI, collaborating with interagency and international partners, and expanding AI expertise in the workforce.

5. Through these initiatives, CISA aims to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity posture, protect critical infrastructure from malicious use of AI, and prioritize security as a core business requirement in AI-based tools and systems.
