The Italian data protection authority, Garante, informed OpenAI that its ChatGPT AI chatbot had violated the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. The watchdog found breaches in privacy rules, including exposed messages and payment information, lack of age verification for users, and concerns about the collection of massive amounts of data to train ChatGPT’s algorithms. OpenAI has 30 days to respond to the allegations and previously fulfilled conditions demanded to lift the ChatGPT ban. Regulators in the US and EU are also scrutinizing AI startups and their relationships with tech giants, while the EU is finalizing its groundbreaking AI Act for broader oversight of AI systems.
