Europcar denies data breach, stating shared customer data is fake after a threat actor claimed to have info for 50M customers. The alleged data, including personal info, was offered on a hacking forum. Europcar confirms the data is fabricated and not from their database. Experts suggest the data was likely not created using AI.
Based on the meeting notes, it seems that Europcar has denied suffering a data breach and suggested that the shared customer data is fake. The company cited several reasons for believing the breach to be fabricated, including inconsistencies in the data samples, such as incorrect addresses and email addresses with unusual top-level domains. Additionally, it was pointed out that some of the email addresses appeared in previous data breaches monitored by Have I Been Pwned, leading to doubts about the involvement of artificial intelligence in creating the data.
Security researcher NexusFuzzy also mentioned existing projects that can create data similar to the fake data breach samples, indicating that this incident may not have involved the use of artificial intelligence. Despite the prevalence of threat actors using artificial intelligence in scams and attacks, it is suggested that this particular incident does not appear to be connected to such technology.
