Google is set to update Safe Browsing in Chrome to provide real-time malware and phishing protection without compromising privacy. The enhanced protection mode will use AI for deeper scans, while the new privacy server and Fastly Oblivious HTTP relays will obscure users’ URLs and IP addresses for added privacy.

Based on the meeting notes, Google is set to roll out a new Safe Browsing update that will offer real-time malware and phishing protection to Chrome users, while ensuring their browsing privacy. This update will utilize Fastly Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) relays to obfuscate visited sites’ URLs and provide enhanced privacy protection. The company plans to switch to real-time checks against its server-side list to keep up with ephemeral malicious websites, as well as to introduce an opt-in Safe Browsing Enhanced Protection mode using AI for deeper scans of downloaded files. This feature is expected to block 25% more phishing attempts. Google is also set to extend the new capability to Android later this month.
