Hacker Caught Stealing Personal Data of 132,000 Individuals Pleads Guilty

Robert Purbeck, also known as Lifelock and Studmaster, has pleaded guilty to computer fraud and abuse charges in a hacking case. He admitted to targeting more than a dozen entities, stealing data and attempting extortion. He will be sentenced on June 18 and has agreed to pay over $1 million in restitution.

Based on the meeting notes provided, it is evident that 44-year-old Robert Purbeck, also known as Lifelock and Studmaster, has pleaded guilty to hacking-related charges after engaging in a series of cyberattacks involving data theft and extortion. The attacks targeted multiple entities, resulting in the theft of personal information from thousands of individuals, including social security numbers.

The Justice Department reported that Purbeck accessed the systems of a medical clinic in Georgia and a server used by the police department of the City of Newnan, Georgia, using compromised credentials acquired from a dark web marketplace. Subsequently, he obtained and retained personal data from these and at least 17 other victims in the United States.

Purbeck has entered into a plea agreement where he has admitted to computer fraud and abuse charges and has committed to paying over $1 million in restitution to the entities he targeted. It was also noted that he attempted to extort some of his victims.

Moreover, the 2018 notes revealed that an individual using the online moniker Lifelock had claimed to have hacked into the systems of an eye surgery center in Michigan, resulting in a data breach compromising the details of 42,200 patients. This individual requested a ‘security fee’ and allegedly sold some of the stolen data on the dark web.
