Russian Water Utility Hacked in Retaliation for Kyivstar Hit

Moscow-based water utility company Rosvodokanal has been incapacitated by a cyberattack allegedly conducted by the Ukraine-aligned “Blackjack” group, causing significant damage to its IT infrastructure and resulting in the deletion of over 50TB of data. Ukraine security services are reviewing 1.5TB of exfiltrated data. The attack is seen as retaliation for a cyberattack on Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile telecommunications service provider.

The Moscow-based water utility and management company, Rosvodokanal, has been severely impacted by a cyberattack allegedly carried out by the “Blackjack” group aligned with Ukraine. The attackers, reportedly aided by cyber specialists from the Security Service of Ukraine, were successful in destroying Rosvodokanal’s IT infrastructure, resulting in the deletion of over 50TB of data, including internal document management, corporate email, backups, and cybersecurity protections. Ukraine security services are reviewing 1.5TB of exfiltrated data from the water utility. This cyberattack is believed to be a retaliatory measure against a destructive cyberattack on Ukraine’s largest mobile telecommunications service provider, Kyivstar, on Dec. 12. As a result, Rosvodokanal utility remains inoperable as of the most recent report on Dec. 20.
