Pakistan Invests $36M in National Cybersecurity

Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee has approved Rs10 billion (US $36 million) cybersecurity funding for enhancing technical capabilities and defending against cyber threats, in response to repeated cyberattacks on the country’s networks. This follows a prior decision to allocate Rs5bn (US $18 million) from information technology to cybersecurity research, amidst reports of cyberattacks on the country’s digital infrastructure.

Based on the meeting notes, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan has approved 10 billion Pakistani Rupees (approximately US $36 million) in funding for cybersecurity. This funding is intended to improve the country’s technical capabilities to proactively detect potential cyber threats. It follows a previous decision to allocate 5 billion Pakistani Rupees (around US $18 million) from information technology to cybersecurity research. The ECC emphasized the need for stronger defenses for Pakistan’s digital information infrastructure in response to repeated cyberattacks. Additionally, the notes reference a recent cyberattack on the ticketing platform of Pakistan’s Super League cricket association.
