Microsoft: Outlook clients not syncing over Exchange ActiveSync

February 9, 2024 at 01:03PM

Microsoft warned Outlook for Microsoft 365 users of potential connection issues with Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) after a January update. This affects synchronization of email, calendar, contacts, and tasks with mobile devices. A temporary fix includes reverting to an unaffected Office build or disabling updates. Microsoft is investigating and will provide a solution.

Based on the meeting notes, it seems that Microsoft has warned Outlook for Microsoft 365 users about issues with connecting to email servers via Exchange ActiveSync after a January update. The Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) is a synchronization protocol used to access email, calendar, contacts, and tasks.

Microsoft has acknowledged the syncing issue and is currently investigating it. In the meantime, a workaround is available, allowing affected users to temporarily fix their Outlook desktop clients. This involves reverting Office M365 Click-to-Run installations to an unaffected Office build or switching to an Office Channel that does not have the syncing issue.

To apply the workaround, users will need to disable updates temporarily, run command prompt as administrator, and execute specific command lines to revert to an unaffected Office build. Once the version revert process is finished, users should check if Outlook is operating normally again.

Additionally, Microsoft is also investigating an issue triggering security alerts when trying to open .ICS calendar files after December 2023 Patch Tuesday Office security updates and has fixed other known Outlook issues such as connection issues for desktop and mobile email clients when using Outlook.com accounts, email sending issues for users with lots of folders, and Outlook crashing when sending emails from Outlook.com accounts.
