Leading U.S. technology CEOs, including from OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia, have joined a new government AI safety board to protect critical services from disruptions. Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas announced the 22-member board, which also includes civil rights advocates and public officials. The board aims to harness AI’s capabilities while mitigating its risks.
From the meeting notes, it is clear that a new artificial intelligence safety board has been formed to advise the federal government on protecting critical services from AI-related disruptions. The board includes CEOs from leading U.S. technology companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia, as well as executives from other major corporations like Adobe, AMD, Delta Air Lines, IBM, Northrop Grumman, Occidental Petroleum, and Amazon’s AWS division.
In addition to corporate leaders, the board also comprises civil rights advocates, Stanford University’s AI institute leader Fei-Fei Li, as well as Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. The emphasis is on understanding and harnessing AI capabilities while mitigating associated risks.
The objective is to help the Department of Homeland Security proactively address evolving AI-related threats. Notably absent from the board are social media companies such as Meta Platforms and X.
Overall, the board’s composition signals a focus on incorporating diverse perspectives to guide the government’s approach to AI safety.
