A cyber-thief, Aleksanteri Kivimäki, was sentenced to six years and three months for stealing and blackmailing tens of thousands of patients’ records from a psychotherapy clinic in Finland. His extortion attempts triggered a surge in reported crime figures. He faces over 5,000 compensation claims and was caught in France after a warrant was issued.

The crimes included extensive extortion attempts and dissemination of sensitive patient information. The former CEO of Vastaamo also received a three-month suspended sentence. Kivimäki’s actions caused a significant increase in reported crime figures in Finland and have led to over 5,000 compensation claims to date. The data breach and extortion spree dates back to November 2018, and the court found Kivimäki guilty based on evidence of his involvement in the cybercrimes. His arrest was made in France on February 3 last year.
