Microsoft is testing a change in the Windows 11 Task Manager to display memory speeds in mega-transfers per second (MT/s) instead of megahertz (MHz). This shift is due to advancements in DDR memory technology, which allow for increased data transfer rates without increasing clock speed. The feature is currently in the beta build and should be used with caution. Source: PhantomOcean3.
From the meeting notes:
– Microsoft is testing showing memory speeds as MT/s (mega-transfers per second) rather than MHz (megahertz) in the Windows 11 Task Manager.
– Historically, computer memory data transfer speed has been advertised under the MHz metric, representing the millions of cycles per second a memory module can perform.
– New technologies have allowed DDR memory to increase data transfer rate without increasing clock speed (MHz), making the old way of measuring memory less accurate.
– Companies and operating systems have migrated to a performance metric called MT/s, representing the number of data transfers in millions per second.
– Microsoft is now testing showing MT/s instead of MHz in the Windows 11 Task Manager performance tab.
– This feature is currently under development and hidden in Windows 11 Beta preview builds. Enabling it using ViVeTool could cause instability on your device and is thus not recommended for production computers.
