Ukrainian, Latvian TV Hijacked to Broadcast Russian Celebrations

Russian hackers hijacked Ukrainian TV channels to air a Victory Day parade honoring WWII defeat of Nazi Germany. At least 15 channels were interrupted and replaced with Russian footage. Astra communication satellites owned by Luxembourg-based SES were disrupted. Ukraine urges TV broadcasters to use alternative methods. Latvian network Balticom was also hijacked, part of Russian hybrid war.

The meeting notes indicate that on May 9, Russian hackers hijacked Ukrainian and Latvian television channels to air a Victory Day parade honoring the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. At least 15 TV channels were interrupted and replaced with Russian footage. The hackers disrupted the Astra communication satellites owned and operated by SES, a Luxembourg-based company. Nacrada, the Ukrainian broadcasting agency, recommends that TV broadcasters use “alternative methods” to receive their signals and respond to the interventions quickly. The cyberattacks were described as part of the Russian hybrid war, and it is expected that such provocations will continue in the future.
