Consumer labels indicating cybersecurity standards compliance will soon appear on smart devices in the US, helping consumers make informed choices. The “Cyber Trust Mark Initiative” allows manufacturers to affix the label if federal standards are met. The labels, similar to the Energy Star program, aim to empower consumers and encourage enhanced cybersecurity practices.
Based on the meeting notes, the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark Initiative is set to introduce consumer labels to help Americans choose smart devices less vulnerable to hacking. The labels will be affixed to products meeting federal cybersecurity standards, including baby monitors, home security cameras, fitness trackers, refrigerators, and other internet-connected appliances. The initiative, formally announced by the White House last year and recently finalized by the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to lead to the appearance of labeled devices before the holiday shopping season. These labels will feature QR codes that consumers can scan for security information about their devices. The initiative has been likened to the Energy Star program and aims to empower consumers while encouraging manufacturers to enhance cybersecurity. Industry participants reportedly include Amazon, Best Buy, Google, LG Electronics USA, Logitech, and Samsung. The initiative is designed to address growing cybercrime related to the proliferation of smart devices.
