Based on the meeting notes, the Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa and several of its properties have been offline for four days following a major cyber attack. The company detected an issue preventing access to multiple servers early on Saturday, June 8 and suspect it to be a cyber attack. Kadokawa’s corporate site and the video-sharing site Niconico are currently unavailable with the latter undergoing maintenance. Niconico, Japan’s second most-popular video-sharing site, is being sorely missed by both the audience and creators who rely on it for income. E-commerce service Ebiten’s website is also unavailable with a notice to customers regarding fulfillment of existing orders, but they currently cannot send confirmation emails. Despite this, Ebiten assures customers that they do not store credit card details on their servers. At the time of writing, Kadokawa has not disclosed any details of the attack or shown any indication of understanding the incident, and it seems that restoration may not be swift.
