Microsoft has introduced spell check and autocorrect features in Notepad for Windows 11 users. The features have been tested by Windows Insiders and are now rolling out to all users. However, the autocorrect feature has limited effectiveness. Users can customize the features in Notepad settings and this marks a series of updates to modernize the application.
The meeting notes indicate that Microsoft has recently introduced a spell check and autocorrect feature in Notepad for all Windows 11 users, marking a significant update to a program that has been around since 1983. The new features have been tested by Windows Insiders since March and are now being rolled out to all users.
The spell check feature will display a red squiggle under incorrectly spelled words and provide correction options when right-clicked. Notepad also includes an autocorrect feature, although it has been reported to work inconsistently in tests.
Additionally, users have the option to customize spell check and autocorrect settings, enabling or disabling them for specific file types such as text, markdown, subtitle, lyrics, and license files.
It’s worth noting that Microsoft has been adding new features to Windows Notepad since 2018, aiming to modernize the application and enhance its functionality to compete with popular Notepad replacements. These new features include enhanced compatibility, find and replace, UTF-8 support, tabs, text zoom, autosaving, line number displays, and a character counter.
