Google has enhanced protections in Chrome against malicious downloads. Users now receive more detailed warnings leveraging AI-powered malware verdicts. Enhanced Protection mode enables automatic deep scanning, catching new malware, while Standard Protection mode checks metadata of files against Safe Browsing. Additionally, the company is tackling malware in encrypted archives with different approaches for each protection mode.
From the meeting notes:
– Google has announced improvements in protecting Chrome users from malicious files downloaded from the internet.
– These improvements leverage AI-powered malware verdicts from Safe Browsing to provide more context and warnings to users, resulting in fewer warnings being bypassed and better protection.
– Enhanced Protection mode now features automatic deep scans of suspicious files, leading to a significant increase in detecting brand new malware and dangerous files.
– For malware distributed via password-protected encrypted archives, Enhanced Protection users are prompted to send the archive and password for scanning, with all data being used only by Safe Browsing for download protections.
– Standard Protection mode users are also prompted for the archive’s password, but the file remains on the device and is checked against Safe Browsing metadata, with the file being flagged if previously analyzed and categorized as malware.
