Email security providers are expanding their offerings to include human risk management tools for data loss prevention (DLP). Mimecast acquired Code42, their second human risk management acquisition this year. Competitors like Proofpoint, Sophos, and ESET are also making similar moves. Mimecast’s CEO highlighted plans to integrate Code42’s capabilities and maintain separate product portfolios.

From the meeting notes, it is evident that Mimecast has been actively investing in human risk management (HRM) capabilities through acquisitions and partnerships. The recent acquisition of Code42, a provider of insider risk management tools, marks Mimecast’s second move into HRM this year. This aligns with a broader trend in the industry, with competitors like Proofpoint also focusing on HRM offerings.

The urgency around HRM is further emphasized by statistics from the Verizon 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report, which highlighted the significant involvement of insiders in data breaches. This underscores the growing need for organizations to evaluate and manage human risk in addition to traditional cybersecurity measures.

Following these acquisitions, Marc van Zadelhoff was appointed as the new CEO of Mimecast, with a focus on expanding the company’s HRM portfolio. The partnership with Code42 aims to integrate the Incydr platform with Mimecast, enabling the automation of user group management and policy enforcement, as well as the detection and management of exfiltration activity.

Importantly, there is a commitment to maintaining distinct product portfolios and creating a common human risk dashboard that ties together Mimecast’s offerings with those of Code42. Additionally, Mimecast plans to introduce new AI tools at the upcoming Black Hat USA Conference to enhance exfiltration risk detection when employees upload files to generative AI platforms.

Overall, Mimecast’s strategic moves in the HRM space align with industry trends and the increasing importance of addressing human risk in cybersecurity.
