Overnight on Saturday, Aug. 3, cyberattackers targeted the computer systems of the RMN, a French cultural institution. The attack reportedly involved ransomware and allegedly affected financial data centralization. However, RMN reported little impact on its related institutions, with no evidence of data exfiltration. Experts suggest the attack may have been underwhelming, possibly aiming to cover another scheme.
Based on the meeting notes, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux et Grand Palais (RMN) was targeted in a cyberattack involving ransomware on August 3-4. The attackers sought a cryptocurrency ransom and targeted the financial data system across the related institutions. However, RMN reported no signs of data exfiltration, and it was clarified that only the internal network of shops was affected, not impacting the other activities of RMN-Grand Palais. The organization quickly disconnected vital systems and engaged the French Computer Security Agency to address the problem. Despite the attack, affected shops are operating normally, and the museums and bookshops remain open to the public under usual conditions. Additionally, security experts suggest that the attack may have been underwhelming and potentially used as a cover for another scheme, and there are ongoing concerns about cybersecurity risks related to the Olympics.
