Microsoft has shared a workaround for a known issue in Microsoft 365 that is causing sign-in errors and rendering desktop applications unusable. The issue affects users of Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, as well as Microsoft 365 Apps for business and Office apps for iOS and Android. Microsoft suggests using the Outlook Web App (OWA) and Office web applications or mobile applications as a temporary solution. Rebooting the device and running specific commandlets in user mode PowerShell may also help resolve the issue.

During the meeting, Microsoft shared a workaround for the known issue triggering ‘Something Went Wrong [1001]’ sign-in errors and making Microsoft 365 desktop applications unusable for many customers. The login issues affect users of Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 Apps for business, and Office apps for iOS and Android.

Microsoft provided the following information:

1. Users attempting to sign into Microsoft 365 desktop applications will receive an error message.
2. Some affected users mentioned that after signing in to the AVD (Azure Virtual Desktop), the Office apps do not sign in and remain stuck with an authentication pop-up saying ‘Something went wrong [1001].”
3. These sign-in errors may occur when security software blocks Web Account Manager (WAM) plug-ins from running.
4. Microsoft is also investigating these login problems as a separate issue by reviewing logs from impacted users.
5. Microsoft asked affected customers to open support tickets in the M365 Admin Portal and attach Microsoft Office Authentication/Identity Diagnostic (MSOAID) logs to expedite the investigation.
6. As a workaround, Microsoft advises users experiencing issues opening Microsoft 365 apps to use the Outlook Web App (OWA) and Office web applications or mobile applications.
7. Microsoft suggests rebooting the device, as it often helps to mitigate the sign-in issue.
8. Additionally, running the mentioned commandlets in user mode PowerShell can repair WAM. The commandlets are provided in the meeting notes.

Further guidance on fixing Office app authentication issues when connecting to Microsoft 365 services and what to do when unable to sign in to Microsoft 365 desktop apps can be found on Microsoft’s support website.
