A Florida data broker, National Public Data, is accused of negligently handling billions of personal records, leading to a cyberattack and subsequent sale of the stolen data on the dark web. California resident Christopher Hofmann filed a potential class-action lawsuit, alleging his and others’ sensitive information was compromised. The lawsuit seeks monetary relief and improved data protection measures from the defendant.

Based on the meeting notes, it appears that a lawsuit has been filed against a Florida data broker, Jerico Pictures doing business as National Public Data, for negligently failing to secure billions of records of people’s private information, which was subsequently stolen and sold on the dark web. The lawsuit was filed in a southern Florida federal district court by California resident Christopher Hofmann, who claims that his sensitive information was among the data stolen and sold.

The plaintiff alleges that the data broker collected and used personal information from potentially billions of people without their consent. It is also claimed that the data was stored negligently without encryption and was accessible to thieves. The lawsuit seeks the destruction of personal information belonging to the class-action members, implementation of encryption and other data protection methods, an infosec program, employee training, and third-party audits to prevent future data breaches. Additionally, the lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary relief for the victims of the data theft.

It is noted that comments have been sought from National Public Data regarding the lawsuit.
